昔は、社会と地理にはどんな関係があったのだろう？社会とは何かというと、人間と人間を繋ぐネットワークである。そういうネットワークを作り、コミュニティーが立ち上がるのだ。しかしそれだけでなく、１００年以上前の社会を考えれば、人と人の直接のつながりで社会が作られていた。つまり、ある人は地理的に近い周りの人を知り、この直接的に広がっているネットワークで社会が動いていた。知り合いの行方、誰かの住所、必要なものを売っている店など、そういう情報を集めるためにはあるコミュニティーの人と直接話すことが必要だった。ある意味で社会と地理が相即不離であった。社会に参加するために周りの人に対して匿名の生活が不可能だったのだ。

しかし、現在はどうだろう？通信技術で地理的に離れている個別のコミュニケーションが可能になったのだ。２０世紀に少しづつこの技術の影響で社会のネットワークの形が変わってきた。一つの広いネットワークだった昔の社会は分散し、弱くつながっているたくさんの小さいネットワークになっていたのである。この過程に非常に強い影響があったのはインターネットなのだ。オンラインでは、自分の知り合いと通信できるだけでなく、地理に関係ないコミュニティーが立ち上がることが可能だ。このように珍しいオンラインのカルチャーに参加できる人が増えたのだろう。数十年前ではありえなかったようなコミュニティーが作られたのだ。しかし、そのことは同時に周りの人との関係が必要であることを打ち消した。社交的なネットワークと地理が分かれている社会を無意識に作ってしまったのである。このように一人一人が周りの人に対して匿名の生活を送ることが可能になるだろう。

特定な場所とあるコミュニティーが分離するようになると同時に地理的なコミュニティーも薄くなる。周りの人間、環境との関係が深くないため、住む場所に対する重点、責任感が変わるのだ。住む場所がコミュニティーを作る現場ではなくなる。少しづつ隔離されている状態が普通になるのだ。この状態から戻るのは非常に難しいかもしれない。なぜなら一人一人の考え方だけでなく、文化的、経済的、技術的な影響があるからだ。この状態には無意識に入ったかもしれないが、出るのは意識的な活動が必要である。コミュニティーを作るのは一人だけでできることではない。同じように、ある場所でコミュニティーを立ち上げるのも様々な人の力が必要だ。やたらと進むと今の社会がさらに分断してしまうかもしれない。しかし、コミュニティーを大切にしている意識を持ちながら自分の未来を考えれば隔離や分断に抵抗できる可能性はあるのだ。

In the past, what was the connection between society and geography? If we ask what society consists of, it is as network that connects humans together. Creating such a network, we build community. But not only that; if we think of the society of over 100 years ago, society was built from the direct connections between people. In other words, people knew the people geographically close to them, and thus society functions through this expanding network of direct connections. The location of an acquaintance, someone's address, a store selling the goods one required, collecting this type of information required one to communicate directly with people in the community. In that way, society and geography were inextricably linked. To participate in society made it impossible to lead a life anonymous from those in one's vicinity.

However, what about the present? With communication technology geographically distance, individual communication has become possible. Over the course of the 20th Century, the influence of this technology has changed the shape of society's networks. The single wide networked society of the past has broken up, and become a collection of smaller weakly connected networks. The Internet has had a profound influence on this process. Online, one can communicate with not only one's acquaintances, but the creation of communities without regard for geographic location is possible. In this way, the people who can participate in uncommon subcultures online has increased. Communities that would have been impossible several decades ago have been created. However, at the same time, the need for connections with the people around us has been negated. We have unconsciously created a society in which social networks and geography are separated. In this way perhaps it has become possible to live a life anonymous to the people around us.

As communities are separated from their specific locations, so do geographic communities become diluted. Due to the shallowness of one's connection with the surrounding people and environment, one's feelings of priority and responsibility for one's living place change. Where one lives ceases to be the site of community creation. Slowly isolation becomes the norm. It may be incredibly difficult to come back from this situation. Making community is not something one can do alone. In the same way, building a community somewhere requires the help of many people. If we proceed blindly our society may become more and more atomized. However, by prioritizing community when thinking of our individual futures, it is possible to resist this isolation and atomization.
